Tewkesbury is one of the better locations in Gloucestershire for aerial filming. The confluence of the Severn and the Avon creates a dramatic natural feature that looks exceptional from the air. The Abbey dominates the town centre skyline. And the surrounding North Gloucestershire countryside, flat farmland stretching towards the Malvern Hills and Bredon Hill, gives you wide, uncluttered horizons that are ideal for sweeping aerial shots.
But drone filming isn't as simple as turning up and launching. There are legal requirements, airspace considerations, and practical decisions about which drone system suits the job. Here's how it works when you book aerial filming in Tewkesbury.
CAA licensing: what's required
All commercial drone work in the UK requires the operator to hold a valid CAA flyer ID and operator ID at minimum. For any work that involves flying near people, buildings, or in congested areas, you need an Operational Authorisation or to fly under the specific category framework with appropriate competency. I hold the relevant certifications and carry full public liability insurance for aerial operations.
This matters more than you might think. If you hire someone without proper licensing, you're exposed to liability if something goes wrong. And if the footage is for commercial use, unlicensed operations can create legal complications down the line. Always ask to see credentials before booking a drone operator.
Four drone systems for different jobs
Not every aerial shot needs the same aircraft. I carry four different systems, each suited to a different type of work:
- DJI Mavic 4 Pro. The workhorse. Hasselblad camera, large sensor, excellent dynamic range. This is what I fly for the majority of commercial and property work. It produces broadcast-quality footage with clean colour science straight out of the camera.
- Sub-250g drone. Weighing under 250 grams, this category of aircraft has significantly fewer restrictions under UK airspace regulations. That's a major advantage in Tewkesbury's town centre, around the Abbey, and in other areas where heavier drones would require additional permissions or simply can't operate. The footage quality is more than adequate for social media and web content.
- FPV drone. First-person-view drones produce dynamic, fast-moving footage that's impossible to achieve with a standard drone. Think sweeping through a building, orbiting a structure at close range, or tracking a vehicle at speed. FPV work is more specialised and tends to suit brand films and creative projects.
- Mini 3 Pro. A compact backup with solid 4K capabilities. Useful as a secondary angle or for quick establishing shots when the primary aircraft is being used for a more involved sequence.
Flying near Tewkesbury Abbey and the town centre
Tewkesbury town centre is classed as a congested area, which means standard drones over 250g face restrictions on how close they can operate to buildings and uninvolved people. This is where the sub-250g drone earns its place in the kit bag. Under current regulations, sub-250g aircraft can fly in areas where heavier drones cannot, making them the practical choice for capturing the Abbey, the medieval high street, and the riverside walks within the town itself.
For the areas outside the immediate town centre, including the flood meadows, the riverside paths south of the Abbey, and the surrounding farmland, the full-size Mavic 4 Pro can operate without issue. These open areas give you the space to fly at altitude and capture the kind of wide establishing shots that define aerial cinematography.
North Gloucestershire: excellent aerial territory
Beyond the town, the North Gloucestershire landscape is exceptionally well-suited to drone filming. The Severn Vale is flat and open, which means clean sightlines and minimal airspace complications. Bredon Hill to the north-east provides elevated terrain for dramatic perspective shots. And the patchwork of farmland, orchards, and villages between Tewkesbury and the Cotswold escarpment gives you a rich visual palette that changes noticeably with the seasons.
Property developers, agricultural businesses, and tourism organisations in this part of the county regularly use aerial footage, and the geography makes it straightforward to deliver. There's very little restricted airspace in the area compared to locations nearer to airports or military sites.
Ground camera included in every drone booking
One thing that sets my drone service apart from dedicated drone-only operators is that every booking includes a full ground camera setup as well. Aerial footage on its own can feel disconnected. It needs ground-level material to cut against: interviews, detail shots, walking shots, establishing frames at eye level. I bring cinema cameras, lenses, and audio gear to every shoot, so the drone footage integrates properly into the finished piece rather than sitting in isolation.
The day rate of £995 covers both the aerial and ground work. You're not paying separately for a drone operator and a camera operator. It's one person, one rate, and a complete set of footage at the end of the day.
Booking drone filming in Tewkesbury
If you need aerial footage in Tewkesbury or anywhere in North Gloucestershire, get in touch and we can discuss the specifics. I'll need to know the location, the type of shots you're after, and any time constraints, and I'll confirm whether the airspace is clear and what permissions are needed before the day.
For a full overview of my Tewkesbury coverage, including ground-based video work alongside drone, see the Tewkesbury videographer page.
I've also written about drone filming across Gloucestershire and drone filming in Bristol if you're comparing options in the wider region.
