I've lived in or around the Forest of Dean for most of my life, and I've been flying drones commercially for several years. The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley are genuinely extraordinary places to shoot aerial footage. They're also not without their complications. Here's what I know from spending a lot of time up in the air over this area.

Why the Forest of Dean works so well for drone filming in Gloucestershire

The landscape is genuinely varied. You've got dense ancient woodland, open hilltops, river valleys, gorges, and old industrial sites that photograph beautifully. In terms of visual diversity per square mile, it's hard to beat. The light here, particularly in the mornings in autumn, is something I never get tired of.

The Wye Valley adds another dimension. The river meanders through limestone cliffs and creates a natural corridor that lends itself to tracking shots. Tintern Abbey from the air is one of those locations that still gets me every time I fly it.

The best locations, area by area

Symonds Yat Rock

One of the most recognisable viewpoints in the region. The rock itself sits inside the Wye Valley AONB and there are some airspace considerations, but with proper planning it's completely achievable for commercial work. The views up and down the river are genuinely cinematic.

Speech House and the Central Forest

The ancient woodland here is dense and brooding, with clearings that catch the light in interesting ways. Good for establishing shots and for any project that needs that sense of a deep, old forest. The lack of significant built-up areas nearby keeps the airspace relatively clean.

Tintern and the Lower Wye

The abbey itself is a scheduled monument, so low-altitude flight directly over it needs careful handling. But the surrounding valley is fair game and provides stunning context shots. The combination of the river, woodland, and the ruin makes it one of the most versatile locations in the whole area.

May Hill

The flat-topped hill on the Gloucestershire/Herefordshire border is a favourite. The distinctive group of trees at the summit is visible for miles, and from the air you get a clear view west towards the Black Mountains and east across the Severn Vale. Great for sunsets.

Clearwell and the Sculpture Trail

A less obvious choice, but the combination of woodland and the distinctive geology of the area makes for interesting aerial footage. Useful for projects that want something more unusual than rolling hills.

What you need to know about permits and airspace

The Forest of Dean falls under Forestry England management for much of the core woodland. Commercial drone filming on Forestry England land requires a permit. It's not complicated, but you need to apply in advance. I handle this as part of pre-production for any shoot in the area.

The Wye Valley AONB doesn't automatically restrict drone use, but any flight near settlements, roads, or listed structures needs careful assessment. The Civil Aviation Authority's drone code applies throughout, and for commercial work I fly with full operator authorisation.

SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) designations cover parts of both areas. Again, this doesn't mean no-fly, but it does mean you need to know what you're landing near and during which seasons. Breeding bird restrictions apply in spring across significant parts of the Forest.

Practical notes for shooting here

Weather windows in the Forest are shorter than you'd think. The tree cover means fog lingers much longer than on open ground, and the valley topography channels wind in unpredictable ways. I always build buffer days into any drone-led shoot in this area.

The best light is early. 6-8am in summer, 7:30-9:30am in winter. The low sun through the forest canopy is what makes this location special, and by mid-morning that quality of light is usually gone.

If you're looking for drone filming for a commercial project in Gloucestershire, the Forest of Dean, or across the Wye Valley, get in touch and we can talk through locations and logistics. For larger productions requiring a full crew alongside aerial work, Singularity Film is set up to handle that.
