Drone footage can completely transform a video project. An opening aerial shot of a development site, a sweeping reveal of a venue, a tracking shot that follows someone through an outdoor space. It adds scale and production value that ground-level footage alone can't match. But filming with a drone in Birmingham comes with a specific set of considerations that are worth understanding before you book anything.

CAA licensing and Birmingham's restricted airspace

Birmingham sits under some of the most controlled airspace in the Midlands. Birmingham Airport's control zone extends across a large portion of the city, which means commercial drone flights in many areas require advance coordination with air traffic control. This isn't a dealbreaker, but it does require planning. You can't just turn up with a drone and start flying.

I hold a CAA GVC (General VLOS Certificate), which is the standard commercial drone qualification in the UK. That means I can legally fly in areas that require permission, including congested zones and near people. I also carry full commercial drone insurance and a detailed operations manual. For most Birmingham locations, I'll assess the airspace restrictions in advance, submit any necessary flight authorisations, and have everything cleared before the shoot day.

The four drone systems I bring

Different shots need different aircraft. I carry four systems to cover the range of what clients typically ask for:

What a drone shoot day looks like

A typical drone shoot in Birmingham starts with a site assessment, either from satellite imagery or an in-person recce if the location is complex. I'll check for airspace restrictions, nearby obstacles, and the best times for light and wind conditions. On the day, setup takes about 20 minutes per location. I'll fly the planned shots, review them on a monitor in real time, and adjust as needed.

Most drone days also include ground camera work. My rate of £995 per day covers both aerial and ground filming, so you're not paying separately for each. If you need drone footage as part of a wider video project, it all comes under the same day rate with cinema cameras, lighting, and audio included.

The sub-250g advantage in urban areas

Birmingham city centre is dense. Narrow streets, tall buildings, heavy foot traffic. Flying a full-size drone through the Bullring or above Broad Street at lunchtime is either going to require significant permissions or simply won't be viable. A sub-250g drone changes the equation. Under current CAA rules, these lighter aircraft can fly in areas where heavier drones cannot, with fewer requirements around separation distances from uninvolved people.

That doesn't mean there are no rules. You still need to fly safely, maintain line of sight, and respect the airspace. But for clients who need aerial shots in tight urban environments, the sub-250g option often means the difference between getting the shot and not getting it at all.

Ground camera included

One thing worth emphasising: when you book a drone shoot with me, you're also getting a full ground camera setup. Cinema cameras, cinema lenses, gimbal stabiliser, wireless audio, and lighting. Most drone operators only bring a drone. I bring the lot. That means you can capture aerial establishing shots and ground-level interviews or b-roll all in the same day without hiring a second operator.

For larger productions that need a dedicated drone pilot alongside a full ground crew, Singularity Film can put together the right team for the job.

If you've got a Birmingham project that could benefit from aerial footage, get in touch and I'll give you a straight assessment of what's possible at your location.
