Food Video in Bristol: Lighting, Pacing, and Why Most of It Looks the Same

By Moss Davis  ·  August 2025  ·  6 min read

Food video in Bristol is a growing market. There are more restaurants, food brands, and FMCG clients commissioning this work than there were five years ago, and the quality bar has risen with it. A lot of it still looks identical — the same warm tones, the same overhead pour shot, the same slow-motion steam. Here's what separates food video that actually builds a brand from the generic template version.

The lighting problem with food video

Food shoots are lit differently from everything else. The goal is usually warmth and texture — you want the food to look appealing, tactile, and real. But "warm and soft" is only half the story. The best food cinematography uses a combination of soft light for the main source and controlled hard light for rim lighting and texture. A Fresnel from the side at the right angle picks up the crust on bread, the glaze on a dish, the condensation on a glass in a way that no softbox alone can replicate.

I carry a full Aperture lighting package including Fresnel and spot lighting with gobos, which gives the level of control that food video specifically needs. This isn't a kit you'd typically expect from a single-operator hire — it's closer to what a gaffer would bring on a larger production.

What does good food video actually show?

The most effective food video tells you something about the experience of the food, not just what it looks like. That means:

Bristol food scene: who I work with

Bristol has a strong independent food and hospitality scene alongside bigger FMCG and drinks brands. I work with restaurant groups looking for menu content, food brands needing e-commerce and campaign video, and creative agencies briefing food shoots for retail and grocery clients.

For directed food shoots where a creative director or food stylist is already on set, I work as camera operator and gaffer — focused on executing the frame, managing the light, and delivering technically clean rushes. For smaller briefs with more creative freedom, I take more ownership of the visual approach.

What to include in a food video brief

The more specific the brief, the better the shoot. Useful things to include:

I can combine video and stills from a single shoot day, which is often the most cost-effective approach for food content. Get in touch with the brief and I'll come back with a realistic plan for the day.
